How to manage your project budget

Working within a tight budget is one of the most complex aspects of any home improvement process. For most people, a home improvement project will only start after weeks, if not months, of deliberation about the details, like how much you are going to spend. Just a few stray details could mean hundreds of dollars in added expenses, if not more.

Before you break ground on a new project, make sure you have a well planned out budget that takes into account things that might interrupt your renovation process. It is impossible to foresee the unexpected, but it is not impossible to plan for it.

Whether you are building a new home brick-by-brick or are adding some additional cabinets to your kitchen, here are a few tips to help you manage your project budget:

* Get everything in writing: Don’t take any risks with misunderstandings. When you create a project plan, make sure you have everything written down so that you have a written contract to refer to in case of an issue. Ensure that the verbally agreed on price is printed clearly in this contract.

* Budget in the unplanned: When it comes to projects, however big or small, the unlikely situation is one where everything goes right and no extra funds are needed. In most cases, something comes up. Plan ahead for this by stowing away a few extra dollars. Things like plumbing leaks, broken equipment and other unanticipated mistakes can’t always be put off to a later day.

* Discuss material costs: When you hire a contractor to do a job for you, in most cases you are putting them in charge of obtaining materials. In addition to discussing the type of materials, get a quote in writing of the expected cost. Shop around and make sure you are getting materials at a reasonable cost.

Talk to your contractor about creating a contract with these details, as well as noting a specific date by which your project should be completed. This is something important to do at the onset of your home improvement process. This can help you a great deal when it comes to managing your budget.

Working within a tight budget is one of the most complex aspects of any home improvement process.

Candle Making Projects ? A Simple Project You Can Do at Home!

Are you looking for some great candle making projects? Maybe you simply want to make a new and unique candle? If you do then you have come to the right place as this article is going to go over one of my favorite unique and fun candle making projects. Are you ready?

The first thing that you are going to want to do is to gather all of the supplies that you are going to need, they are as follows: candle wax ( I suggest paraffin wax for this project), crayons, wick, wick tab, double boiler, carving knife, spoon, thermometer, scented oil ( optional ), boiling bags, a boiling pot, and a candle mold. You are going to be making a very colorful crayon candle, ready to get started?

The first thing that you are going to want to do is to take all of the crayons and remove all of the paper wrapping from them. Take the boiling pot and fill it about half way up with water, when the crayons are ready, place them in the boiling bags, separate all of the colors as much as possible and use as many boiling bags as possible in order to separate all of the colors. Put the heat on and bring the water to a boil, place the boiling bags in to the pot of boiling water and let them boil for about five minutes, when they are melted lower the heat to a simmer and leave the bags in the pot.

Now prepare the mold, wipe the inside of the mold with olive oil and string the wick through the wick tab. When this is done then place the wick tab in the bottom center of the mold. Now prepare the wax by filling the bottom pot of the double boiler half way up with water. Cut chunks of the wax in to the top pot. Boil the water and stir the wax often, check the temperature as when it is around 180 degrees it is ready.

When the wax is ready you can ass the scents if you desire. Now pour some of the wax in to the mold, you can use a ladle to make this process easier. This is why this is one of my favorite candle making projects, pour some of the wax, then pour some of the crayon wax in, then some more wax, then a different color of the crayon wax, continue this process until the candle mold is filled to the top. Now put the mold to the side, let it sit for 24 hours. When it is ready remove it from the mold and trim the wick to a quarter of an inch. You are done with this project but always be on the look out for more fun and creative candle making projects as you never know what you are going to find.

Thank you for reading and I really hope this helps you out, for more candle making projects, or for more candle making tips in general, simply click the links! Thank you again for reading and have fun making candles!

Project Planning Essentials

Very few project plans are simple and straightforward because there are often so many contributing factors to take into account. What exactly are all the tasks that will be required and how long will each task take? Are there dependencies between tasks? Some tasks or activities may require specialist skills or training and sub-contractors may need to be hired for certain aspects of the project. The initial brief may not be very detailed or, even if the requirements are fully documented, problems or omissions may still be revealed at the planning stage. There may also be an unrealistic fixed deadline to contend with.

Time and Money
Project Managers can come under enormous pressure to complete a project by a fixed deadline that has been set because of factors outside their control. This may be a marketing issue where time-to-market for a new product is critical; it may be an investor requirement or any number of other reasons. Whatever it is, the project manager has to work with it. But the worst thing to do is to try and squeeze all the necessary tasks into the schedule and allow for no slippage.

It is completely unrealistic to expect that there will be no need for contingency in the schedule of any project however large or small. So what can be done if all of the required tasks simply will not fit into the time available? Assuming that you have reasonable estimates for these tasks (and make sure that you do) then the best option is to negotiate with the project sponsors to scale back the requirements by either removing some aspects altogether or altering the final deliverable. It is far better to deliver a working product without lots of fancy bells and whistles than to deliver a product with myriad features but in which the basics do not function properly.

Surveys of individuals affected by the roll-out of a new product highlight the fact that users are usually only interested in the basics working.

So always ensure there is a time contingency built into your plan and if the schedule simply does not allow for this because the project is over-ambitious then negotiate for a reduction in the features of the final deliverable. The same applies to the costs of the project “” keep them within budget by scaling back the features rather than cutting corners and delivering a poor quality product or service.

Planning a project is a balancing act between achieving a high quality product or service at the end of the project and having a responsible and realistic attitude towards the timescales and costs involved. These two aspects are not mutually exclusive and with the right skills they can be balanced very effectively.

People
You may, as a project manager, be fortunate enough to be able to select your own team members, but very often the team is the one assigned to you. This is particularly true where work is outsourced to sub-contractors or partners.

In either case the key element that will affect the whole of the project, and your ability to manage it effectively, is how committed the team members are. For large projects you will have to appoint just a few people, gain their commitment and then ensure that they work with more junior members of the teams to ensure the commitment of everyone involved.

Project managers have different skills, personalities and methods of working so it is difficult to define one approach that works better than another. But the key factor to gaining commitment throughout your team is to nurture the individuals within that team. That means noticing when they have done a good job and praising them for it, taking an interest in their concerns or problems with the project and watching out for issues between different team members such as personality clashes. You might think these are not part of the role of a project manager but try taking a personal interest in key members of the team on your next project and see for yourself what a difference it makes when you build up a team that value each other, trust each other and can work together with real commitment.

Planning Techniques
As with every area of business today, there are software packages available to make the job of a project manager easier. However, a full understanding of the basic principles of project planning is essential in order to get the most out of these tools. The tools are only ever as good as the workman.

Some of the most frequently used techniques in project planning are Brainstorming, Cause and Effect Diagrams, Gantt Charts and Critical Path Analysis.

Just as brainstorming is a useful technique during the business analysis and requirements phase so it can also be useful at the planning stage to identify relationships between tasks, to throw up ideas for efficiency or cost savings, to raise issues of concern and highlight potential problems.

At the planning stage the charts and diagrams are useful tools to visualise all of these issues and more. They can help to clarify different aspects within the plan and, depending on the type of project, they may all be used for different, but equally valid reasons.

Each of these four techniques: Brainstorming, Cause and Effect Diagrams, Gantt Charts and Critical Path Analysis are covered in detail elsewhere.

Using A Project Manager To Build A Home

Using a project manager to build a home is one of the best decisions that you can make. You may not have any experience in the management field or simply do not have the time. In this case, a project manager will be able to organise every step of the building process and make sure that this work is performed in a quick and efficient manner without losing the quality of the job. The timeframe and budget are two of the most important factors that a project manager will have in mind while building your new home.

What Are the Responsibilities of a Project Manager?

Project managers have plenty of responsibilities that they carry out every single day. From very fine details to large planning projects, the project manager is one of the hardest workers of the crew. This person will delegate jobs and create a working schedule for each day. This ensures that there is no confusion as to who is working on what and that the best people are selected to build your home.
This person is also in charge of having the necessary materials on site and that the project is completed on time and within your budget. Sometimes deadlines and budgets cannot be perfectly judged but a project manager intends on doing his/ her best by comparing costs so that you pay less, approving the work that has been completed, negotiating with businesses and workers, and fixing any problems that arise on the job.

How Do You Hire a Project Manager?

Finding and hiring a project manager can be rather simple. You can find a great project manager through a surveyor, an architect or a builder. You can ask for references and see some of the homes that this project manager has worked on. In many cases, you will also be given a list of clients that you can contact to get a better idea of how the client relationship was with the project manager. Once you find the person that you would like to work with, he/ she can then begin to plan out a budget and a timeline for building your new home.

How Much Does a Project Manager Cost?

Hiring a project manager means that you are paying a bit more, but you might be saving a lot more in the long run if your project manager does his or her job correctly. Many project managers will offer a flat fee for the project or approximately 2 to 3 percent of the overall construction costs. It is always a great decision to hire a project manager as this person will be able to notify you about the project in depth and how progress is being made. They are always available to you in the case that you have a problem.

Wood Screws for Every Home Improvement Project

Often when people are working on little or big projects around the house they tend to just make due with materials and supplies they have found around the house. Wood screws are often one of those items that are simply used as available. While many different screws will work for several projects, taking the time to have the right fasteners on hand really does make a difference.

Wood screws are different than metal screws or other types of specialty screws. They have a slightly coarser thread and they come to a definite point at the end to allow the screw to self-start into wood. The thread on the screw literally bites into the wood, holding the screw in much tighter than a smooth nail. In addition these types of screws generally are designed with a flat head that allows the screw to be positioned flush to the wood surface, leaving a smooth surface. Round head screws have a dome shape to them and will protrude slightly from the wall or wood surface. These are typically used in areas where the screws will not be seen. Oval head screws are the least common and they are just slightly raised or convex through the head, not as noticeable as a full round head. These screws can be used to make a very finished looking fastening on furniture or other items. Generally all types of screws are available with a slotted or Phillips type of head as well, with the choice a personal preference. Specialized types of screws can also have different slot types, perfect for a variety of woodworking and construction projects.

Wood screws come in a wide variety of lengths depending on your needs. Typically the longer the screw the heavier and larger the objects are that are being connected or held in place. Smaller screws are used for the smaller objects or in wood that is very brittle or hard. Drilling hole in these types of wood surfaces before starting the screw is recommended and this greatly reduces the chance of splintering or splitting as the screw is inserted.

Depending on the size and type of screw it can be made of several different materials. Carbon steel is the most common metal for wood screws and this steel is generally coated with zinc to give a nice, shiny, rust resistant surface. These screws are resistant to corrosion and are good for both indoor and outdoor use. Brass screws are also popular and they may be left in the natural brass color or they can be coated with another color or material as well. Brass screws are very resistant to corrosion and degradation over time, making them a good choice for outdoor construction needs.

Stainless steel screws, sometimes known as 18-8 stainless steel, are a good option for all types of uses. These are the screws most often used in building boats or any type of construction where the surface will be exposed to water, snow or ice. They are very resistant to rust and corrosion and they are very hard and not prone to breaking or twisting even when used in very hard wood. Hardened steel and 305 stainless steel are also excellent options for all weather types of construction. Silicon bronze screws are likewise extremely strong and durable and can be used in all types of construction, including marine remodeling and building.

Wood screws can also be coated or finished to match with specific colors and finishes. Different colors including green, black, brown, tan and blue are available as are yellow zinc finish screws. Checking out the variety of different screws for different projects is a good idea before you get started as you can really add to your project by choosing the right hardware.

Sandy Winslow is a writer on many topics, including construction and home improvement. There are literally hundreds of types of wood screws available to give you everything you need in fasteners for your next do-it-yourself project.

Always plan ahead for any home project

Planning to do a bathroom remodel can be a rewarding family experience perhaps even a father and son weekend project. When doing a do it yourself bathroom remodel it can go along smooth and easy or could turn into an absolute disaster if not properly planned.

As for my bathroom remodel project, disaster would be a nice word! I conjured up the idea one morning before work and off on a whim I went very much unprepared for what I was venturing into.  My thought process was somewhere out there in limbo because I had the idea in my mind that replacing the toilet and installing ceramic tile was as simple as removing a few plastic bolts and slapping a little grout on the back of the tiles . I was totally off course! What started off as a weekend project for my son and I ended up being a month long process with our master bath being a disaster site and my family of 5 fighting daily for the guest bath!

Proper planning is the key to success to any bathroom remodel regardless of your level of skills. I quickly learned that many of my bathroom fixtures no longer fit as they once did. The ceramic tile is another story within itself. I described laying tile as trying to assemble a puzzle with irregular pieces; they just were not fitting the way I had planned. Out came the heavy machinery as my son calls it and with a couple of precise measurements and swift cuts I somehow managed to make my puzzle complete.

My next unforeseen roadblock was the bathroom door. I didn’t think to calculate the height of the door to floor ratio before going from linoleum floors to tile. As I’m sure you’ve already guessed the door wouldn’t close after reinstalling and there went another $ 200 for a new door added to the growing budget!

Despite all the headaches and backaches I endured from running wildly with my bathroom remodel I must say it was a very delightful learning experience for my son and I. Quality time with him made all the  hassles of the entire process worthwhile !.

Many of my disasters could have been diverted. If you do not do remodeling work every day, don’t expect to complete it without a hitch. In the event it just becomes too much to handle a local company can finish your bathroom remodel quickly. A few days after regaining usage of my newly improved bathroom I had to call in a local handyman because I apparently damaged a pipe when reinstalling my cabinets.  Needless to say that was another $ 120 added to budget!
